United States pursues attrition strategy against Iran

United States President Donald Trump has stated that the conflict with Iran will reach a resolution soon, either through continued military operations or a formal agreement. Trump emphasized that the United States has prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and predicted that the U.S. will ‘win the war with Iran very soon.’

Analysts suggest the U.S. is currently employing a strategy of attrition rather than a full-scale ground invasion. This approach focuses on exhausting Iran militarily and economically through naval blockades, targeted military strikes, and sanctions targeting the aviation and energy sectors. Recent U.S. sanctions on Iranian airlines have already impacted regional flight operations in countries such as the UAE, Oman, and Iraq.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical flashpoint in the conflict. While Tehran has reportedly offered to reopen the strait if U.S. military pressure and port blockades are eased, Trump previously rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day truce and the reopening of the waterway. The ongoing tensions have contributed to volatility in energy markets, with Brent crude oil rising above $106 per barrel following the rejection of the Iranian proposal.
