Russia begins diesel shipments to US under Trump-Putin deal

The first tanker carrying Russian diesel has departed from the Baltic port of Primorsk, destined for New York. The shipment, consisting of approximately 40,000 tons of ultra-low sulfur diesel, is expected to arrive on November 7. This marks the first import of Russian petroleum products into the United States since 2022.

The delivery is part of an agreement reached between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to increase the supply of diesel to global and American markets to stabilize fuel prices. Under this arrangement, the US Treasury Department has issued a temporary license allowing transactions related to Russian diesel through April 7, 2027.

Russian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, stated that Russia could supply between 3 and 3.5 million tons of diesel monthly to the global market by the end of the year. While the initial phase involves 300,000 tons, subsequent shipments of 500,000 tons are planned for November, followed by larger volumes.

The deal has faced domestic political opposition in the US. Some Senate Democrats are reportedly preparing to investigate American companies involved in the trade and seek to block future sanctions waivers, arguing the move undermines efforts to penalize Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
