United States reaffirms Pacific commitment amid regional partnership discussions

The United States is reaffirming its strategic commitment to the Pacific region, focusing on security, economic cooperation, and strengthened partnerships with island nations. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau highlighted priorities including defense ties, private-sector investment, and disaster resilience ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Summit in Palau.

In discussions regarding the Compact of Free Association (COFA), Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine has called on Washington to maintain local flexibility in managing U.S.-funded projects. While pledging accountability and transparency, Heine emphasized the need to address the unique geographic and logistical challenges of the Marshall Islands. Under a 2024 agreement, the Marshall Islands is set to receive $2.3 billion over 20 years as part of a larger $7 billion commitment to the freely associated states, including Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia.
