United States and Armenia endorse Morocco's Sahara autonomy plan
During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States and Armenia have reaffirmed their support for Morocco's sovereignty and autonomy plan regarding the Western Sahara region.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, stating that the United States remains committed to the development of the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. Landau emphasized that bilateral relations between Washington and Rabat are at their strongest level ever and noted that the existing fifty-year status quo regarding the territorial dispute cannot be maintained.
Simultaneously, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan expressed Armenia's support for Morocco's autonomy initiative. Mirzoyan, following discussions with Bourita, characterized the plan as a realistic political solution that supports Morocco's territorial integrity. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also signaled support in a letter to King Mohammed VI, identifying UN Security Council Resolution 2797 as a pivotal step toward a peaceful resolution and regional coexistence.
