United States reallocates $52 million in military aid to Latin America

The United States is redirecting $52 million in foreign military financing from Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia, and Iraq to Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Peru. This strategic shift aims to combat narcoterrorism in the Western Hemisphere and secure the Panama Canal.

In Panama, security and humanitarian cooperation budgets have increased significantly, rising from $10 million last year to over $100 million this year. Recent assistance includes the delivery of four drones valued at more than $6 million and various training programs. Panamanian officials have clarified that this funding does not signal an increased U.S. military presence in the country, noting that South Command participation has focused on medical operations, engineering, and infrastructure projects like pedestrian bridges.

Panama continues to cooperate with the U.S. regarding the security of the Canal, ports, customs, and logistics systems. While Panama remains on a U.S. list of major drug transit or production territories, officials noted that the designation is based on geographic and economic factors rather than a failure to meet anti-narcotics commitments, a distinction that separates Panama from countries like Bolivia and Colombia in Washington's assessment.
