United States recognizes Vietnam as key Southeast Asian partner

During a reception celebrating the 81st National Day of Vietnam in Washington, D.C., U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker identified Vietnam as a vital partner in Southeast Asia. She described the bilateral relationship as a model of reconciliation and progress toward a shared future of peace, security, and prosperity.

Key areas of ongoing cooperation include addressing war legacies, such as landmine clearance and unexploded ordnance disposal, as well as security, economic development, education, and cultural exchanges. Hooker also highlighted advancements in technology, investment, and the aerospace sector, noting the importance of the relationship since it was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized Vietnam’s journey from a war-affected nation to the world’s 32nd largest economy, with a GDP exceeding $500 billion. He noted the country's goals to reach upper-middle-income status by 2030 and become a high-income developed nation by 2045.
