United States Refunds $81 Billion in Tariffs After Supreme Court Ruling

The U.S. Treasury has paid out about $81 billion in tariff refunds this fiscal year, up from $5 billion in the same period last year. The surge follows a Supreme Court decision that struck down a large portion of tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act during the Trump administration. Most refunds were processed in May and June, and businesses in Ohio have begun receiving payments.

The higher refund volume comes as the federal deficit widens to $1.367 trillion in the first nine months of the fiscal year, with interest costs on the national debt exceeding $1 trillion. The administration is preparing a new set of duties, potentially ranging from 10 % to 12.5 %, aimed at alleged lax enforcement of anti‑forced‑labour laws and excess industrial capacity. The proposals could affect major trading partners such as the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Taiwan, China, and Brazil.
