United States rejects Taliban proposal for Afghan mining investment
The United States Department of State has rejected a proposal from the Taliban government regarding U.S. investment in Afghanistan's mining sector. State Department spokesperson Tammy Pegot characterized the Taliban as a “global terrorist group” and stated that Washington has no plans to engage in the development of critical mineral resources under their rule.
U.S. officials expressed concern that investing in Afghan mines would provide increased financial resources to the Taliban, potentially enabling further “horrible behavior” toward the Afghan people.
In response, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi previously expressed a desire to normalize relations with the United States based on mutual respect and shared interests. He urged the U.S. to reconsider its stance and invest in Afghanistan's mining, infrastructure, agriculture, and trade sectors. Additionally, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid has reiterated the group's intent to establish “good relations” with Washington.
