United States faces major measles surge with 4,588 cases

The United States is experiencing a significant measles resurgence, with 4,588 confirmed cases recorded in 2026. This figure is more than double the total from 2025. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that at least 43 separate outbreaks are currently occurring across the country.

Pennsylvania is among the hardest-hit regions, reporting 1,338 cases and at least six deaths, including two infants. Other states, such as South Carolina and Utah, have also surpassed 500 cases. In response to the rising numbers, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state disaster emergency to bolster vaccination efforts.

Health officials attribute the surge to declining vaccination rates. Kindergarten vaccination coverage has dropped from 95.2% in 2019-2020 to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year. The CDC noted that 96% of confirmed cases involve individuals who are unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status. The World Health Organization is scheduled to review the United States' measles elimination status in November 2026.
