U.S. revokes visas for 27 officials in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru FAST-MOVING

The United States government has revoked or restricted visas for 27 officials, former officials, and businesspeople from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This diplomatic action is part of the ‘Shield of the Americas’ initiative, a policy promoted by the Trump administration to combat corruption, narcotics trafficking, and efforts to undermine democratically elected governments in the region.

Bolivia is the most heavily impacted, with the U.S. Department of State specifically naming Attorney General Roger Mariaca, former Justice Minister Iván Manolo Lima, and constitutional magistrate Israel Ramiro Campero among those sanctioned. Mariaca is accused of abusing his public office to accept bribes and facilitate narcotics trafficking. Additionally, nine other Bolivian citizens were declared ineligible for future visas.

In Colombia, the sanctions target businessman Euclides Antonio Torres and Senator Martha Isabel Peralta. Ecuador saw visa restrictions applied to two citizens and their families, while Peru included a constitutional judge in the measures. The U.S. administration stated that these actions are necessary to protect regional security and the rule of law against organized crime and corruption.
