International Criminal Court officials sanctioned by United States

The United States government has imposed new sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye. The measures include freezing U.S.-linked assets and restricting access to the American financial system and entry into the United States.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the ICC as a “corrupt and fatally politicized supranational court” that has exceeded its mandate. The sanctions are part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration against the court, specifically in response to ICC investigations involving officials from the United States and Israel.

The ICC has condemned the move as a “flagrant attack” on the independence of an impartial judicial institution, warning that such actions threaten the international rule of law. The court noted that the administration has already sanctioned nine of its 18 judges.

International reactions have been mixed. EU officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, expressed support for the ICC and its leadership. Japan, the ICC’s largest funder, described the sanctions as “very unfortunate” while maintaining its commitment to the rule of law.
