United States school bus history and evolution
The iconic American school bus, characterized by its distinctive ‘school bus yellow’ hue, is currently facing challenges including a shortage of drivers. The specific shade was not mandated by law but was selected by transportation officials from 48 states in 1939 due to its high visibility.
Historically, the metal-bodied school bus emerged from rural America. Georgia car dealer Albert Luce designed an early version to transport cement workers before marketing it to schools. This coincided with the consolidation of school districts, which moved students from small, one-room schoolhouses to larger, more distant facilities.
Beyond transportation, school buses played a significant role in the desegregation of American schools by transporting Black and white children across racial divides. The industry has since evolved to include various safety standards, such as padded seats and retractable stop signs, maintaining its reputation as a highly safe form of passenger transportation.
