United States seeks direct communication channels with Hezbollah

The United States is reportedly exploring ways to establish a direct line of communication with Hezbollah through various local and international mediators. This effort follows suggestions made by U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barack, who emphasized the necessity of involving Hezbollah and Iran in any direct negotiations or settlements, arguing that Lebanese parties alone cannot resolve the underlying issues.

Mediation attempts have involved several channels, including Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and diplomatic visits, such as U.S. Ambassador to Beirut Michel Issa meeting with high-ranking religious figures following trips to Iran and Iraq. U.S. officials appear to be drawing on previous experiences with direct dialogue involving the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Houthis in Yemen to inform their approach in Lebanon.

While some domestic figures in Lebanon advocate for direct negotiations to reduce tension and balance political power, sources indicate that Hezbollah currently rejects direct communication with Washington due to various considerations. Despite these rejections, unconfirmed reports have circulated regarding a potential direct meeting between the two parties last month.
