United States seeks political solution for Western Sahara dispute

United States senior advisor Massad Boules stated that there is no imminent solution to the Western Sahara conflict, noting that Washington is currently awaiting feedback from the Polisario Front regarding Morocco’s autonomy proposal. Following three rounds of discussions involving representatives from Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front, Boules emphasized that significant work remains to be done.

The U.S. maintains its position of recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the territory and supporting an autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty. This diplomatic activity precedes a critical October meeting of the UN Security Council, which will address the renewal of the MINURSO mission mandate, currently set to expire on October 31, 2026.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita noted that recent international dynamics, including support from various countries, have strengthened the momentum for the Moroccan autonomy plan. He indicated that bilateral support for Morocco's position is increasingly manifesting within the multilateral framework of the United Nations.
