United States sees record rise in citizenship renunciation

The number of Americans renouncing their citizenship or ending their permanent resident status has reached its highest level since 2020. An analysis of Federal Register data shows that 5,790 individuals were reported to the Department of the Treasury as having relinquished their citizenship or green cards over the last four quarters.

Experts attribute this trend to two primary factors: heavy tax burdens and political disenchantment. The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), passed in 2010, significantly increased the complexity of international taxation by requiring foreign institutions to report on the accounts of American citizens. This often results in expatriates facing double taxation in their new countries of residence.

Beyond financial considerations, some legal experts suggest that growing political turbulence in the United States is diminishing sentimental attachment to the country, prompting more individuals to seek permanent residency elsewhere.
