United States shifts strategy toward Iran using economic pressure

The United States has shifted its strategic approach toward Iran, prioritizing economic pressure and sanctions over direct military action. This strategy aims to induce economic collapse in Iran, where inflation has reached 88.6% and the IMF predicts a 5.4% economic contraction. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has noted the significant decline in the value of the Iranian currency as an indicator of the strategy’s impact.

However, intelligence officials previously warned President Trump of the potential fallout from large-scale military strikes. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard reportedly advised that assassinating Iran's leadership could install a more radical administration and lead to the destabilization of global energy markets via the Strait of Hormuz. Military commanders also cautioned that a campaign would result in high casualties and deplete munitions stockpiles.

Despite these warnings, a military invasion was initiated on February 28. While the administration initially projected a six-week timeline for victory, the conflict has continued for nearly six months without a clear conclusion. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps continues to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
