United States signals shift in NATO defense strategy
United States Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby has signaled a major shift in transatlantic security, informing NATO Chiefs of Staff that European allies must take responsibility for the continent's conventional defense. This strategy, referred to as ‘NATO 3.0’, suggests that while the U.S. may maintain its nuclear umbrella, space activities, and satellite intelligence capabilities, it is preparing to reduce its permanent presence of 80,000 troops in Europe.
The Pentagon is currently conducting a ‘US Force Posture Review’ to evaluate troop numbers, locations, costs, and the necessity of maintaining or closing various bases. The review is expected to present several options to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth by November 6, with a final decision anticipated before the end of 2026.
Beyond military deployment, Washington is introducing new political requirements. The U.S. will evaluate allies based on their defense spending, their procurement of American weaponry, and their alignment with U.S. foreign policy priorities. Allies have reportedly received questionnaires regarding their military strategies and arms purchases as part of this assessment.
