United States solar capacity surges, new innovations power millions

Solar installations remained the dominant source of new electricity generation in the United States, accounting for 54% of all new capacity added in 2025. The country added 43 GW of solar that year, supplying roughly 37.6 million homes. Residential products are expanding beyond traditional panels: solar tiles and shingles integrate photovoltaic cells into roofs, while transparent photovoltaic glass and higher‑efficiency monocrystalline panels are moving toward wider residential use.

In the first quarter of 2026, solar and energy‑storage together represented 91% of all new U.S. generation capacity, and renewables made up 96% of new additions overall. For the first time in May 2026, solar generation exceeded coal generation nationally. In Texas, the ERCOT grid operator expects record‑high demand but reports that abundant solar and battery capacity have prevented blackouts, with solar supplying 35‑45% of the state's electricity on recent peak days. California’s battery fleet also discharged nearly 13 GW in a single evening, covering about 44% of demand.
