United States strengthens Guyana defense and air surveillance capabilities

The United States and Guyana are expanding their security cooperation through technical training and financial investment aimed at enhancing Guyana’s aerial capabilities.

A Mobile Training Team from the US Air Force’s 571st Mobile Support Advisory Squadron recently conducted technical training for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Air Corps. This engagement focused on engine maintenance for the GDF’s King Air aircraft to improve aircraft turnaround times, sortie generation rates, and overall operational readiness for responding to regional security challenges and natural disasters.

Additionally, the United States has pledged US$2 million to bolster Guyana’s air surveillance and drone capabilities. This funding, announced following a meeting between US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and President Irfaan Ali, is intended to help Guyana monitor its airspace and develop unmanned-aircraft systems. The investment supports priorities including border security and counternarcotics, building upon a security cooperation agreement signed in March 2025.
