United States summons Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to break negotiation deadlock

The United States has summoned the ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel to a meeting at the State Department to address the implementation of a June framework agreement. This diplomatic effort aims to break the current deadlock in negotiations and prevent further military escalation along the southern border.

The framework agreement, mediated by Washington, proposes a progressive withdrawal of Israeli troops from specific areas in southern Lebanon, to be replaced by the Lebanese Army through the creation of pilot zones. It also includes mechanisms for the verifiable disarmament of armed groups. While the first phase began in July, implementation has faced challenges due to ongoing attacks and the continued presence of Israeli forces in certain territories.

Despite these efforts, Lebanese President Michel Aoun has indicated that there are currently no prospects for new dialogues. Tensions are exacerbated by Hezbollah’s refusal to disarm, as the group maintains its arsenal as a strategic guarantee. Additionally, upcoming Israeli legislative elections in October and Lebanon’s severe domestic economic crisis are complicating the diplomatic landscape. A formal round of conversations is expected to take place in Rome in October.
