United States Supplies 67% of India's LPG Imports

The United States has become India’s largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas, accounting for about 67% of the country’s LPG imports, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said. India had originally planned to source roughly 10% of its LPG needs from the United States, a decision taken before the recent Gulf tensions and not linked to concerns over the Strait of Hormuz.

Puri noted that the shift in sourcing occurred as global energy markets were strained by the war in West Asia and the Russia‑Ukraine conflict, prompting India to diversify its energy supplies. He also highlighted the government’s Rs 84,000 crore “Samudra Manthan” deep‑sea hydrocarbon exploration mission aimed at boosting domestic production and energy self‑reliance, alongside broader efforts to build strategic reserves and expand alternative fuel use.
