United States supports efforts to unify Libya’s institutions
The United States has expressed support for efforts to unify Libya’s economic, security, and political institutions. Massad Boulos, US Presidential Adviser for Africa and the Middle East, stated that Washington is engaging with influential Libyan parties to encourage national unity and a Libyan-led political process. Boulos noted that the US is working with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to facilitate lasting peace.
Recent developments cited as signs of progress include the approval of Libya’s first unified national budget in 13 years, valued at 190 billion Libyan dinars, and increased military cooperation between eastern and western forces, exemplified by participation in the US Africa Command’s Flintlock 2026 exercise.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reported positive signs regarding negotiations to unify the eastern and western regions. Fidan indicated that Turkey intends to continue acting as a mediator in the process. However, analysts note that Libya remains a site of international competition driven by its strategic location and natural resources, with historical instability linked to the 2011 regime change.
