United States targets visa abuse and asylum claims

The United States Department of State is preparing a significant crackdown on visa holders who subsequently apply for asylum. One reported measure involves the potential revocation of up to 200,000 B1 and B2 tourism and business visas issued between 2016 and 2026. The administration aims to target individuals who allegedly use temporary visitor status as a legal shortcut to settle in the country after claiming asylum.

U.S. Undersecretary of State Christopher Landau has highlighted a specific pattern of abuse involving diplomatic and official visas (categories ‘A’ and ‘G’). Data reviewed by the Department of State between 2019 and 2023 indicates that foreign officials have entered the country representing their governments, only to later claim they face persecution from those same governments.

In one instance, 420 individuals from a single nation entered on official visas before requesting asylum. Other nations have also shown significant rates of such requests, with some exceeding 10 percent of their official visa holders. While visa revocations do not trigger immediate deportation, they strip individuals of their visitor status while their legal standing is determined by the courts. U.S. embassies have been instructed to apply increased scrutiny to these types of visa applications.
