United States terminates TPS for over 500,000 migrants

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 500,000 migrants from various nations, including Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This decision removes legal protections that allowed citizens from countries facing crises to live and work in the U.S. temporarily.

Venezuelans are the most heavily impacted group, with hundreds of thousands affected by the expiration of designations from 2021 and 2023. For Hondurans and Nicaraguans, the termination is set for September 8, 2025. While a federal judge in California previously attempted to block the application, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that decision, upholding the termination.

The cancellation also affects migrants from several other nations, including Haiti, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nepal, South Africa, Burma, Somalia, and Ethiopia. Those without other legal bases for residency now face potential deportation proceedings.
