United States: The role of sports in the aftermath of 9/11

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, the role of sports in providing cultural unity and a sense of routine during national tragedies is being reflected upon. On the morning of the attacks, the sporting world was in the midst of various seasons, including the final stretch of Major League Baseball and the conclusion of the US Open.

The attacks resulted in 2,977 direct victims: 2,753 in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 on Flight 93. While sports could not repair the damage caused by the tragedy, stadiums served as aid centers and sporting events provided spaces for communities to gather and process the event.

Sports offer a unique paradox of being seemingly trivial yet possessing a fundamental power to weave communities together through unscripted competition and shared human excellence.
