United States threatens EU over ESG and sustainability regulations

The United States government has threatened to take action against the European Union unless Brussels limits its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) regulations. Washington contends that these rules place an unfair burden on American companies operating within the EU.

U.S. Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, stated that the EU must honor commitments made under the Turnberry trade framework to ensure American businesses do not face ‘unjustified restrictions’ in transatlantic trade. The dispute centers on two primary pillars of EU corporate sustainability: the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). While the EU has attempted to reduce bureaucracy by scaling back these laws, the U.S. maintains they still impact American firms regardless of their headquarters.

Additionally, the U.S. has criticized the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, characterizing it as a tariff on American exporters. The White House has also raised concerns regarding the EU and over 40 other countries allowing Chinese products to bypass certain trade barriers.
