New US secondary sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector have caused significant disruptions to international flights. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the measures, which aim to prevent foreign companies from providing fuel, landing services, or ticketing to sanctioned Iranian carriers, would effectively shut down Iranian airlines globally. Some reports suggest up to 80-90% of Iran’s external flights have been affected.

As a result, several regional airports, including those in Baghdad, Muscat, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, have suspended or restricted Iranian flights. In Iraq, some services are being redirected to Najaf International Airport. While some routes to China and Russia remain operational, many transit hubs in Turkey and the UAE have seen cancellations.

In response, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned that Iran would retaliate against neighboring countries that cooperate with US efforts to block its flights. Rezaei also stated that Iran will not engage in negotiations with the US or reopen the Strait of Hormuz until seven specific conditions are met, which have been conveyed through intermediaries.
