United States threatens to leave IEA unless climate policies are reformed
United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright has stated that the U.S. may consider withdrawing from the International Energy Agency (IEA) unless the organization undergoes strategic reforms. Speaking at a business forum in New York, Wright expressed a preference for reforming the Paris-based agency rather than leaving it.
The administration seeks to shift the IEA’s focus back to its original mandate of energy security and market analysis, specifically regarding oil, natural gas, and coal. This move comes in response to the agency’s recent expansion into clean energy development and monitoring Paris Agreement goals, a shift that has drawn criticism from the oil industry and the current U.S. administration.
The United States currently provides approximately 25% of the IEA’s annual operating budget. Wright emphasized that the agency should prioritize core missions over scenarios that he described as being driven by political popularity.
