United States tightens economic and travel sanctions on Cuba
The United States has significantly tightened economic and travel sanctions against Cuba. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the new measures include the imposition of secondary sanctions on foreign financial institutions that conduct transactions on behalf of individuals on U.S. sanctions lists.
Key financial restrictions include a ban on U.S. banks opening or maintaining accounts for Cuban entrepreneurs, with an immediate requirement to freeze existing funds. Additionally, the U.S. has revoked the 'U-turn' mechanism, which previously allowed certain dollar-denominated payments related to Cuba to be processed through the U.S. banking system. All direct and indirect financial transactions with entities controlled by the Cuban military and state security agencies are now prohibited.
Travel and cultural exchange regulations have also been tightened. U.S. citizens and residents are now restricted from organizing or attending professional conferences on the island. Programs for humanitarian exchange and group educational trips have been canceled or placed under strict oversight by authorized U.S. organizations.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla criticized the move, stating that the sanctions target both the public and private sectors and hinder the country's ongoing economic transition. He characterized the measures as an attack on the Cuban people.
