United States to establish permanent military base in Poland

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States and Poland are making “major progress” toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland. The move aims to expand the American military presence on NATO’s eastern flank. Trump credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki for advancing the initiative and stated that the specific location of the installation would be announced “very soon.”

This potential expansion comes as the Pentagon conducts a broader review of its military posture in Europe. The U.S. is considering a redistribution of its approximately 80,000 personnel across the continent, which may include troop reductions in countries such as Germany, Italy, and Spain. While the U.S. currently maintains a permanent garrison in Poznan and utilizes other locations for rotational forces, a new permanent installation would require significant infrastructure development, including housing and schools, to accommodate several thousand additional personnel and their families.

Poland has been a key partner in this effort, leading NATO nations in defense spending as a percentage of GDP. The shift toward a more permanent presence in Poland is viewed as a strategic move due to its geographic proximity to Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
