The United States, Denmark, and Greenland are set to sign a major security agreement on Tuesday during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The pact aims to bolster Arctic security and expand American military presence in Greenland.

Under the agreement, the United States plans to establish or reopen two military sites. One location is Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland, which served as the Bluie West One base during the Cold War. The second site is in Mestersvig on the east coast, an outpost currently utilized by the Danish Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

The agreement includes provisions to restrict military or economic influence from non-NATO members, specifically targeting Russia and China, and limits sensitive investments in critical infrastructure like telecommunications and minerals to the U.S. and its allies. While President Donald Trump has characterized the deal as granting the U.S. permanent control over Greenland's security, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the pact respects Danish sovereignty and the right of Greenlandic people to self-determination. Denmark also noted that the agreement places Arctic security under the collective supervision of NATO rather than solely under bilateral control.
