United States to modernize passport applications with new online system

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a major modernization of the American passport application process. Starting next year, first-time applicants will be able to complete their applications entirely online via login.gov. This new digital system aims to eliminate the need for printing forms, scheduling in-person appointments, or visiting drugstores for physical photos, as digital selfies will be permitted.

Alongside the digital transition, the Department of State unveiled a redesigned passport featuring enhanced security elements and patriotic designs, including a commemorative eagle motif.

In related policy developments, the administration is strengthening visa restrictions. New measures target foreign nationals and their immediate family members who obstruct international parental child abduction cases. Additionally, the Department has enacted visa restrictions for foreign nationals perceived to be undermining democratically elected governments in Western Hemisphere countries.
