United States to pay $725 million to United Nations soon

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed that the United States is expected to pay $725 million to the organization “very soon” to help reduce its outstanding debt. This payment is intended to address a severe liquidity crisis currently facing the UN.

The planned disbursement includes $725 million for the UN regular budget and an additional $125 million designated for peacekeeping operations in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This represents the largest payment made by the administration of President Donald Trump since his return to the White House in January 2025, during which he has demanded significant organizational reforms.

While the United States owes the UN approximately $5 billion—with over $2 billion for the regular budget and $3 billion for peacekeeping—Washington has indicated that continued payments are conditional upon the implementation of UN reforms. The UN has repeatedly warned that delays in member state contributions threaten its ability to maintain essential operations.
