United States to pay $850 million toward UN debt
The United States government has notified Congress of its intention to pay $850 million toward its outstanding dues to the United Nations. This represents the largest payment made by the Trump administration to the organization since it began demanding sweeping institutional reforms.
The State Department plans to allocate $725 million to the UN's regular budget and $125 million to peacekeeping operations in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite this payment, the U.S. remains behind on approximately $5 billion in total membership dues, which includes over $2 billion for the regular budget and $3 billion for peacekeeping.
The move follows warnings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding an imminent financial collapse of the organization. The Trump administration has previously criticized the UN for inefficiency and bureaucracy, and has withdrawn from several UN-affiliated agencies, including the World Health Organization and UNESCO.
