United States to provide mobile consular services in Laâyoune
The U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca has announced a schedule of mobile consular services that will include a stop in Laâyoune this November. This marks the first time American consular services will be provided in a major city within the Sahara region.
The mobile services, which include passport assistance and notary services for U.S. citizens, are part of a schedule running from October to December 2026. Other scheduled stops include Marrakech in October, Ouarzazate in November, and Oujda in December.
This administrative measure does not constitute the opening of a permanent consular post. It follows a diplomatic trajectory initiated in December 2020, when the United States recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. Recent activities in the region include Ambassador Duke Buchan III’s visit to Laâyoune in July 2026 to announce USAID funding for the ORNX Morocco hydrogen and ammonia project.
