United States to return $3.5 million to The Gambia

The United States is preparing to transfer approximately $3.5 million to The Gambia following the sale of a luxury villa in Potomac, Maryland. The property was confiscated by U.S. authorities after being identified as an asset acquired through the alleged corruption of former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh.

Gambian Justice Minister Dawda Jallow announced that both nations are finalizing an agreement to facilitate the repatriation of these funds. Once transferred, the money is intended for the Reparations Commission, which is tasked with compensating over 1,000 victims of crimes committed during Jammeh’s 22-year rule.

While the recovery is a significant symbolic victory for the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, officials noted that the proceeds from this single property sale will likely be insufficient to cover the full scope of reparations owed to all victims.
