U.S. pauses immigrant visa appointments and plans mass revocations FAST-MOVING
The U.S. Department of State has implemented a global pause on immigrant visa appointments at all American embassies and consulates. This suspension is intended to facilitate a worldwide training initiative for consular officers. The training aims to equip staff with updated guidelines to more rigorously and consistently assess whether visa applicants might become dependent on U.S. public benefits, a concept known as the “public charge” rule.
In a separate but related move, the administration is preparing to revoke up to 200,000 B1 and B2 non-immigrant visas. These revocations target individuals who entered the United States on business or tourism visas but subsequently applied for asylum. The Department of State is coordinating this action with the Department of Homeland Security to address what officials describe as the misuse of visitor visas to seek permanent residency.
Applicants who already had scheduled interviews have begun receiving notifications via email that their appointments are being rescheduled, though no specific timeline for the resumption of regular services has been provided. Officials noted that the revocation of visa status does not automatically result in immediate deportation, as many individuals with pending asylum claims may simply have their status re-categorized.
