United States trade deficit rises to $88.6 billion in July
The United States goods and services trade deficit rose to $88.6 billion in July, a 24.4% increase from the revised $71.2 billion recorded in June. This monthly increase was driven by a $17.6 billion rise in the goods deficit, which reached $119.6 billion, while the services surplus grew slightly by $0.2 billion to $31.0 billion.
In contrast to the monthly spike, the year-to-date goods and services deficit has decreased by $188.4 billion, or 29.6%, compared to the same period in 2025. During this year-to-date period, exports increased by $237.2 billion (12.0%) and imports rose by $48.8 billion (1.9%).
Detailed data indicates that July exports totaled $310.7 billion, down $6.6 billion from June, while imports reached $399.3 billion, up $10.8 billion from the previous month. Analysis of the goods deficit suggests that a portion of the widening is attributed to price changes rather than volume, with the increase in imports being driven largely by computers.
