United States: Trump faces public opposition and legal setbacks

A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that a majority of Americans oppose recent actions by President Donald Trump, including the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods and an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’. The survey found that 57% of respondents oppose the tariffs, while only 20% support them. The renaming of the lake applies only to federal government usage within the United States.

Separately, a federal judge in Maryland has issued a preliminary injunction against a recent executive order by President Trump aimed at restricting birthright citizenship. Judge Deborah Boardman ruled that the policy, which seeks to limit citizenship for children of certain foreign nationals and target ‘birth tourism,’ is ‘almost certainly unconstitutional.’ The ruling follows previous Supreme Court decisions regarding the 14th Amendment and aims to protect the citizenship rights of children born on U.S. soil.
