United States pressures Europe to release diesel reserves

The United States is pressuring European allies to release strategic diesel reserves to combat rising global fuel prices. Washington has specifically requested the release of 120 million barrels of diesel over a six-month period to increase market supply.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has proposed this release as an alternative to more drastic measures. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a ban on diesel exports to lower domestic fuel prices ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. European officials have noted that such an export restriction would have ‘very heavy consequences’ for the European economy.

The European Commission is coordinating with member states, including France, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, to evaluate different scenarios. EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen stated that any coordinated release would likely be managed through the International Energy Agency (IEA). While the EU is discussing these options, the final decision to release reserves rests with individual member states.
