United States uses visa revocations as tool of foreign policy
The United States is increasingly utilizing visa revocations as a tool of foreign policy and political pressure in Latin America. A notable recent case involves the cancellation of the U.S. visa for Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. López Beltrán has accused U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau of making a politically motivated decision, prompting him to write to President Donald Trump.
While the U.S. government has not released specific reasons for the cancellation, legal experts note that a visa is a discretionary permit granted by the government rather than an acquired right. Under current tightened immigration policies, authorities have reinforced reviews for visa applicants and holders.
Common grounds for visa cancellation include overstaying authorized periods, involvement in criminal activities, posing a risk to public safety, or links to terrorism. The U.S. Embassy has reiterated that a valid visa does not guarantee entry, as admission remains at the discretion of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the time of arrival.
