On 27 July 2026 the United States delegation left a United Nations Security Council meeting on Ukraine while French ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont was speaking. The walk‑out followed the United States joining North Korea, Russia, Nicaragua and Mali in voting against the renewal of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk’s mandate in the General Assembly. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz defended the United States, accusing France of backing a human‑rights chief who “cozy‑ups to the world’s worst oppressors”.
