Ethiopia and Eritrea sever diplomatic ties amid regional tensions

Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea have collapsed following a series of retaliatory actions. Ethiopia expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats and closed its embassy in Asmara, accusing Eritrea of hostile actions and supporting armed opposition. In response, Eritrea severed all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia.

The United States has issued a warning, urging both nations to exercise maximum restraint to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the Horn of Africa. Washington noted that renewed hostilities would jeopardize ongoing US cooperation with both countries on shared interests.

Simultaneously, the African Union Commission called for restraint involving Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to prevent wider regional escalation. This appeal drew pushback from Egypt, which rejected being included in the AU statement, characterizing the situation as an internal Ethiopian matter. The African Union subsequently clarified that its statement was not intended to assign responsibility for Ethiopia's internal crisis to Egypt.
