Nicaragua: UN condemns human rights abuses and power concentration

The United Nations has issued a stark condemnation of the human rights situation in Nicaragua, with High Commissioner Volker Türk describing the current state of affairs as ‘completely indefensible’. A recent UN report details the progressive dismantling of democratic institutions and the rule of law, noting a near-total concentration of power within the Executive and the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) party.

The report highlights that the FSLN maintains absolute control over the legislature, 153 municipalities, and both regional councils of the Caribbean coast. Furthermore, constitutional reforms approved in a first reading aim to exclude opposition participation and postpone elections until 2028. Since the 2018 protests, at least 56 media outlets have been closed, and thousands of civil society entities have been dissolved.

In response to these developments, the United States has signaled a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ toward the Ortega-Murillo regime. US officials have placed Nicaragua on a regional blacklist alongside Cuba and Venezuela, with the White House intending to implement more aggressive sanctions to counter authoritarian abuses and the regime's alignment with powers such as Russia and China.
