United States weather: Cold front to bring dramatic temperature drops

A potent cold front is expected to sweep across the United States, bringing the lowest temperatures seen since spring to many areas east of the Rockies. Before the cooling arrives, much of the central and southern U.S. will face extreme summerlike heat, with dozens of locations forecast to hit record high temperatures on Tuesday.

In the central U.S., highs in the 90s are expected as far north as Illinois and Indiana, while cities like St. Louis, Detroit, and Cleveland may see record-breaking heat. The Southeast, including Atlanta and Nashville, will also face temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s.

By Thursday and Friday, the cold front will trigger dramatic temperature swings, potentially dropping highs by more than 30 degrees in many locations. Some areas in the northern U.S. may experience freezing overnight temperatures for the first time since spring. Additionally, the front may increase the risk of multi-day flooding across Texas and the Plains.
