United States wind energy capacity projected to reach 46 GW by 2029
Wind energy capacity in the United States saw significant growth in 2025, with 7 gigawatts (GW) installed, marking a 36% increase from the previous year. According to reports from Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association (ACP), the sector is positioned for continued expansion, with 46 GW of cumulative capacity projected between 2025 and 2029.
This acceleration coincides with a shift in the U.S. electrical system. After a decade of relatively flat demand, electricity consumption is expected to grow by an average of 3% annually through 2029, compared to just 0.7% in the prior decade. Data centers are a primary driver of this trend, expected to account for 59 of the 90 GW of new peak demand forecasted.
Projected installations include 10.7 GW in 2026 and 12.7 GW in 2027. While the third quarter of 2025 saw installations fall 23% below projections, the fourth quarter saw a significant surge, contributing 3.8 GW, which represented 52% of the year's total capacity.
