United States winter 2026–2027 forecast predicts heavy snow and El Niño influence

The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its winter forecast for 2026–2027, predicting a season heavily influenced by a strengthening El Niño phenomenon. While much of the United States may experience milder temperatures near or above seasonal averages, significant weather disruptions are expected in specific regions.

In the northern United States, approximately 150 million people across 29 states could face intense snowfalls, winter storms, and sudden cold snaps. Areas including the Great Lakes, the Midwest, and the Great Plains are expected to encounter rapid cyclones and intense precipitation. Specifically, residents in Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio are advised to prepare for sudden blizzards and high winds.

The Northeast may see a complex pattern of rain, sleet, and ice, with heavy snow possible in Pennsylvania, western New York, and parts of New England. Meanwhile, the South and West are projected to be wetter, with the Southwest and Gulf Coast potentially facing frequent storm systems. The forecast suggests that the combination of El Niño and a possible southward shift of the polar vortex will drive these diverse and often extreme weather conditions.
