United States witnesses broad popular resistance to President Donald Trump

During his first term (2017‑2021) and after beginning a second term in January 2025, President Donald Trump has faced substantial internal opposition in the United States. The resistance has taken many forms, including large‑scale demonstrations, labor actions, electoral campaigns, solidarity movements, civil disobedience, and the emergence of left‑wing candidates in major cities.

A prominent example was the Women’s March held the day after Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, which drew an estimated three to five million participants protesting the president’s sexism and threats to reproductive rights. The Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade—enabled by judges appointed by Trump—triggered nationwide protests and mobilized voters in subsequent elections. These movements illustrate an ongoing clash between an authoritarian, nationalist agenda and democratic, egalitarian aspirations within American society.
