United Sugar recalls 1.7 million pounds of sugar over wheat contamination

United Sugar Producers and Refiners has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 1.7 million pounds of light brown and powdered sugar due to potential wheat kernel contamination. The recall, classified by the FDA on September 21, affects products distributed across eight U.S. states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Retail products include 2-pound bags of Target’s Good & Gather brand light brown sugar (UPC 0 85239-08454 0) and powdered sugar (UPC 0 85239-08455 7). Industrial and larger-scale products involved include 50-pound bags of United light brown sugar and United 6X powdered sugar, as well as 25-pound bags of Crystal Sugar powdered sugar.

Consumers are advised to check batch numbers to identify affected items. For Good & Gather, affected batches include MHD26223 through MHD26229. The FDA warns that wheat is a major allergen and exposure can cause serious reactions, including hives, swelling, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.
