UnitedHealth Group reports strong Q2 2026 earnings amid profit margin scrutiny
UnitedHealth Group reported strong financial results for the second quarter of 2026, with earnings per share of $6.38, significantly exceeding the analyst consensus of $4.94. The company reported quarterly revenue of $112.03 billion, a 0.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. Revenue is driven by its US health insurance business and its Optum services division, which provides data analysis and pharmacy services.
However, a study commissioned by the Insurance Watchdog Coalition has challenged how the company reports its profitability. The study, conducted by economist Nam D. Pham, Ph.D., claims that UnitedHealth Group obscures its true profit margins by including pass-through medical claim reimbursements as revenue. According to the findings, when these costs are excluded, the company’s operating profit margin averaged 33.0% from 2020 to 2025, compared to the reported average net margin of 7.6%.
